europe lessons

originally i created this blog to post my travels in europe. but one thing led to another and well it didn't happen. but now i am back from the trip and there's lots to write about. so let's start with what i learned while i was away. (these are in no particular order.)
first i learned that traveling to europe is a good thing to wipe out your savings on : ) the amount of money i spent on the trip was all well worth it. i am looking forward to spending more of my hard earned savings next summer. second, i love traveling! i can not wait to go back . . .especially to spain and london. i didn't have near enough time in either of those places. third, it is okay to have a crush on a statue . . . The David in Florence is a-m-a-z-i-n-g! you can look at him all day and not get bored. fourth, god's creation is beautiful, the sunsets we saw in italy, greece, and spain were unreal. fifth, there is a big world out there . . . and there is no reason why i should get stuck in my little corner of austin. (please feel free to remind me of this whenever necessary.) sixth, i am so much better with directions when i have a map in my hands. that realization confirmed two things: i'm such a visual learner and i need a gps system in my car so i won't get lost every time i drive some where new. all in all i loved my trip!!!

hello my name is ____

what is my name? introducing myself to people has become very awkward lately and rather confusing. let me try to explain. if i introduce myself as 'melissa' it is not very helpful because no one calls me by my first name. introducing myself as 'rubey' feels a little weird because that's my last name, but that is what eveyone calls me. yet, when i do make it easy and introduce myself as 'rubey' people have no idea it's my last name, they think it's my first name. some people have suggested introducing myself as 'melissa rubey' but that is way too formal. i would feel real silly saying that. so i guess it will continue to be a countless awkward moment when i meet new friends . . . i'll just be (rubey) until people figure out my real name is melissa.
